half day on 4/1

Making Plans for Spring Break? Maybe you have already reviewed the schoolwide schedule and noticed that we have a half day on 4/1 across the campus. It is important to note that start and end times for each period may vary from the normal schedule due to following the half day schedule. Specifically, Be sure to review this schedule closely to avoid being tardy to your class. Juniors will be taking the ASVAB Test from 8:45am-12:10pm.

What’s happening in class?

Senior Elisabeth Embry led a Fermentation Lab for our Honors Biology students this past week. Elisabeth is currently studying under Mrs. Faircloth as a *“lab tech”. Elisabeth prepared for the lab by researching, gathering materials and even practiced the experiment herself.  On the day of the lab, she taught a short lesson on the differences between lactic acid and alcoholic fermentation, set up a demonstration with yeast, flour, sugar & water, then instructed the students on how to carry out the second part of the lab (hand sprints) in groups of 2. Elisabeth walked around, answered student questions, and cleaned up.  Elisabeth is a fantastic example of today's students becoming prepared for tomorrow's world!

Also pictured is Anderson Embry.  When Elisabeth asked for an assistant he gladly volunteered. Thanks Anderson!

*If you are a junior or a senior and are interested in pursuing a career in teaching or want more time in our science department, ask one of our science teachers about becoming their personal “lab tech”. Spots are limited.

Chapel

God’s timing is impeccable. He arrives on time, in power, and for our highest good. Our great God has a special way of doing this in the HS every Thursday during chapel. This week was no exception. Our gifted counselor Mrs. Kayla Whittle utilized her unique training in Psychology, her decade long experience counseling teens, and her love for the word of God to deliver a powerful and practical message from Gal.1:10 -

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Mrs. Whittle skillfully connected social media norms and tendencies to the mortal danger of “seeking the approval of men”. Her three cautions were that social media, improperly utilized, can lead to pride, shame, or complacency, none of which are God’s goal for our lives. Her redirection was powerful: “Comparison doesn’t EVER yield the results that are positive for us. Period. Why? Because we are giving our attention to others or to ourselves instead of Jesus who can give us abundantly more than we ask, think or imagine.” Ultimately, we were all encouraged to have the mind of Jesus. Mrs. Whittle rightly pointed us to the solution in God’s word modeled by God’s Son:

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross.” (Phil.2:3-8).
