Black History Month Wrap Up

As we wrap up Black History Month here in the high school, we have had the opportunity to hear from some inspiring speakers and grow in our knowledge of some of the amazing Black Americans who have made our country great! Here are a few of the highlights from this month:

We kicked off the month with an inspiring message from Vernon Strickland, a Newnan native who despite many difficulties in his early life went on to play in the NFL and now is a managing partner with the law firm of Strickland Debrow LLP as well as an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech.

In AP Human Geography, students watched and discussed a documentary on economist Walter Williams. Many of his thoughts and ideas about economies, culture and race relate to topics we have been discussing throughout the course.

The students also researched an African-American male and female who had made a contribution to the field of geography and wrote an essay about each.

In World History classes students were introduced to a wide range of people in addition to interacting with primary documents and quotes from these individuals.

In AP Language students took a deep dive into letters and speeches from Martin Luther King Jr. and analyzed his powerful use of language to move and inspire people.

Algebra I students have been learning about famous mathematicians such as Valerie Thomas, Katherine Johnson, and Benjamin Banneker.

In Literature III students are reading the autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave who is one of American history’s most important abolitionists. They learned about his courage, intellect, and determination and how these qualities helped towards the liberation of thousands of enslaved people.

Additional activities:

Students enjoyed viewing the blockbuster movie Hidden Figures with its all-star cast during the lunch hour. The movie is based on the black mathematicians behind America’s first space launch.

Students followed the clues throughout the school in a fun scavenger hunt looking for ordinary inventions such as brushes, eggbeaters and potato chips.. When they found the item, they read the card attached which detailed the stories of the black men and women behind these important items that make everyday life better.

Posters of Benjamin Banneker, Marva Collins, and Ruby Bridges were posted throughout the school illustrating the amazing accomplishments of these inspiring Americans.

Challenges from Chapel

This past Thursday in chapel, both our students and staff were blessed to experience an amazing time of worship led by an all boys worship band in our underclassmen chapel and Kevin and Riley joined our senior girls worship leaders in senior chapel. In both environments, our students were challenged to be bold in their faith! Our seniors were blessed to hear a challenging message from one of our high school math teachers, Tony Geasley. His message encouraged students to recognize that people are placed in their lives for a reason and they need to be willing to take a risk and travel a path that may not be comfortable. In underclassmen chapel, our students were challenged to stay strong in their beliefs no matter what happens in life. Oscar Camejo did an amazing job challenging them to be bold. We also got to celebrate Oscar on his birthday! Chapel is always a special time to celebrate, worship, connect, and grow. Continue praying with us as we see growth and transformation in the lives of our students each week!
