HOPE Scholars
Hot off the press! 80 out of 93 Seniors currently qualify as HOPE Scholars! This is a fantastic number and a great representation for our TCS Lions!
Black History Month
In AP Government, students have studied the landmark Supreme Court case McDonald v Chicago (2010), a 2nd amendment case won by a black American, Otis McDonald, against the City of Chicago. They have also taken an in depth look at "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" as one of the foundational documents, as well as the work of other civil rights leaders.
In APUSH, as part of our focus on the Gilded Era, we consider black entrepreneurship during this period. We also understand Booker T Washington and W.E.B. du Bois's conflicting perspectives on attaining civil rights.
In AP European history, as part of the broad impact of the Industrial Revolution, we considered the impact on the rise of slavery and watched "Amazing Grace" to understand Parliamentary efforts to ban the slave trade. As a part of this, we learned of different abolitionists including former slave, Olaudah Equiano.
The PreAP World History classes are exploring aspects of Little Rock Nine and the Montgomery Bus Boycotts. These discussions include but are not limited to specific emphasis on Minniejean Brown, Rosa Parks, and Claudette Colvin.
Students in AP Econ and Econ took time interacting with and writing responses to quotations from economist and social philosopher Walter Williams.
The US History students have been looking into the life, accomplishments, and impacts on us today by Frederick Douglas. The students have been examining how important education is in the success of African Americans “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
Week Three: Feb. 22-26 - Highlight Black Americans whose innovations have impacted American life in some way.
Week Four: March 1-5 - Highlight Black Americans whose ideas have been Transformational to an aspect of our society.
**Because of winter break, we will continue into the first week of March
