Arts Academy 2023-24 Updates

2023-24 Report

We are off to a great start in the Arts Academy, and it is so exciting to see all of our students thriving in private lessons.  We have increased our instructor base to total 15 instructors, new instruments are now being offered, and lessons are happening all over campus.  Last year we taught a total of 2,270 lessons with 136 active students.  This year we are looking to break that by quite a bit.  We have five rooms with acoustic pianos available, and a handful of other areas as well to teach.  Recently I needed a rehearsal room and had to walk to the other side of campus to find one because all of our rooms were in use through the Academy.  This is so exciting!

Lesson Cost - 2024 Increase

Starting this month, January of 2024, all 30 minute lessons will be $35 per lesson.  This pricing is in line with the industry and teachers throughout our area, and reflects inflation but also the value of our instructors.  Please be aware of this increase, your instructors should be putting this into effect this month.

Website & Growth

You are our greatest source of advertisement for the Academy.  Please share the great things that are happening with your student and their progress.  We are constantly taking on new students, please help us by encouraging other families to get involved.  We also take non-TCS students after school, we want to offer what we have to the community as a whole.  We are also interested in new instructors.  If you know of an instructor interested in getting involved, we would be glad to speak with them and see if it’s a good fit.  Feel free to direct them to the website: https://tcslions.org/arts-academy.

INSTRUMENT REPAIR

We use Big Note Music for on site repair of many of our musical instruments.  If you have an instrument that needs repair as the school year begins, this may be a great option for you.  The process works with you filling out an online form, pre-paying for the repair, and then they come for a scheduled repair session right on our Trinity campus.  Your student wouldn’t be away from their instrument except when it’s on the repair table.  This convenient option has worked for us for a few years now.  Simply fill out the online form and let us know that a repair has been scheduled.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given . . . and His Name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Might God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace!”

Christ came as Emmanuel, God with us.  This is amazing to me, that God Himself would leave perfection and come down to earth, to dwell with man and to save us from our sins.  He bridged the gap that separated us from His Presence!  And the Spirit is still present, and wants to walk through each day with us.  And so let us receive Him, let us celebrate that He came, and let us do this with joy as a light to the world.  Let us walk in a way that would honor the Lord and show the world what an amazing God we serve!

A very Merry Christmas to you!  May God’s Presence reign in your heart and your home!  And may you sense His blessings in every day of this holiday season and into the new year!!

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let earth receive her King.”

As we enjoy the holiday season, there are many exciting elements to enjoy together.  Trips, meals together, and giving thanks.  Concerts, programs, and plays.  Presents, family, and friends.  We are so blessed at Trinity to be able to freely proclaim the love of Christ through all of these.  The holidays are a special time for us to celebrate His birth and the Father’s love for us!

As your Performing Arts staff navigate all of these events, we are consistently sharing the love of Jesus and pointing students back to His saving grace.  We seek to find spiritual meaning in all that we do, and to help our students keep a Biblical worldview through all of the extras of the season.  Christ came as Emmanuel, God with us.  And the Spirit is still present, and wants to walk through each day with us.  And so let us receive Him, let us celebrate that He came, and let us do this with joy as a light to the world.

Looking ahead, we want you to be aware that in January of 2024 all 30 minute lessons will be $35 per lesson.  This pricing is in line with the industry and teachers throughout our area, and reflects inflation but also the value of our instructors.  Please be aware of this increase, your instructors will be putting this into effect starting the first of the new year.

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come, let earth receive her King.”

As we approach the holiday season, there are many exciting things in store.

Happy Thanksgiving and a very merry Christmas to all of our Trinity families!

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education because

rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.” – Plato

It is not an understatement to say that music education has been one of the most important parts of our individual and collective development as people across time. The practice of music has been used to entertain, heal, bring people together, educate, and most importantly draw us closer to God. Observing the current conversation surrounding music education and advocacy in schools, it seems that the impact of music has been lost along the way and deemed non-essential in some educational settings. But for us at Trinity, we understand the significance of a healthy music education program in our students’ development.  I love the statement of the Belgian author, Paul Carvel: “Music deserves to be the mandatory second language of all schools in the world.” We are working hard to enhance the offerings we have for each student at each level.  And we so appreciate the support from each of our TCS families.  We are succeeding together, and great things are in store for all of our students in the Performing Arts!

There are solo and group opportunities for instrumentalists, vocalists, physical art, technical art, drama, etc. All students grades 6 to 12 are encouraged to enter, and it is a great way to receive constructive feedback from evaluators, develop your talents, grow in your walk with Christ and meet new friends and cultivate those friendships. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

(Borrowed from Robert Stocklas, University of North Alabama Bands)

Why band? ... here's why ... grab your coffee and read this ...

Let’s assume, for simple math, we have a moderate to above average-sized marching band of 100 wind players, 20 percussion, 20 color guard, and two drum majors. Now, while it seems fairly straight forward…just play your music and march to various spots on the field… here’s what REALLY is facing them.

In an average production of 2 minutes duration, there will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 notes played per student (some parts will be less, some more). For each note played, the student must be responsible for:

Correct fingering of note

proper tone quality

proper pitch

correct beginning articulation

correct release/ending

correct duration/timing

balance to other players

blend with other players

appropriate volume

This means at least 9 responsibilities per note times 300 notes…understand that sometimes the student will not play during segments, so this is an average…2,700 responsibilities per student…times 100 players = 270,000 musical responsibilities for the wind section.

Percussion will have more notes in snare/mallet parts, perhaps fewer in bass drum and accessory parts, but on average, about the same number of musical concerns …substitute stick heights for pitch correctness, since it is not typical to tune drums as you go. This adds 2700 responsibilities…times 20 percussionists = 54,000 musical responsibilities for percussion.

Color Guard must be concerned with:

timing

hand positions

equipment angles

speed of spins

height of tosses

direction of spins…not to mention holding on to or catching equipment

Number of counts roughly parallels musical notes, so assume 300 beats times 6 responsibilities, or 1800 items per guard member…times 20 members = 36,000 more things to do.

So far, we are up to 360,000 responsibilities, and we haven’t touched marching. With marching, there are at least the following considerations:

posture

direction of facing

instrument position

staying in step

staying in form

size of step

tempo

style of movement (Toes up? Knees straight? Shoulders square?)

control of space between members

On average, there will be one step per beat of music, or approximately 240 steps. This means 240 times 9 responsibilities per member,…times 140 members …302,400 more things to think about.

The drum majors must be on top of:

tempo, beat pattern

dynamics

communication of style/energy to band

poise/showmanship

or approximately 1200 items… times two majors…2400 more responsibilities.

Keeping up so far? We’re up to 664,800 things that have to be done correctly… AND WE’RE JUST TALKING ABOUT THE FIRST PRODUCTION OF THE SHOW!! Assume there are three segments in the average show, our grand total jumps to a staggering 1,994,400 responsibilities on the members for a single performance.

The next time you watch a marching band show, examine the level of expectation and delivery that occurs with each student. It is truly remarkable, and it will help you appreciate even more the feeling that comes from a well performed show. When they are done, stand up and cheer their efforts…they are truly at the top of the ‘responsibility pyramid’ when performing in marching band.

Why Band? That's why ...

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOr

We are now finishing our fourth week of school, and are already noticing improvement in  each of our Arts areas!  The students came in ready and hungry to learn, and are truly soaking it all up!  From amazing auditions in all of our Theatre groups, to first notes in the Band and Orchestra rooms, to new students coming in and bringing solid gifts, we at Trinity are truly blessed!

As we progress through the school year, the students’ efforts at home are just as important as on campus.  We know that practice at home and individual time invested in their part to play makes a huge difference.  Students come in more confident when they have worked at home, and make much larger strides in their personal development.  And the group as a whole benefits as well, with each person contributing fully to the group effort.

Parents, please continue to encourage your student to put in the effort.  This encouragement from home is vital as we partner together.  Keep working on memorization of lines and lyrics, practicing those scales over and over, working on vocal technique, studying theory, and so much more.

Lastly, THANK YOU for your support and encouragement.  We sense this in great measure from you, our parents!  Our families are outstanding, and we are seeing God do great things in the Arts as we continue to partner together!

NEW PRACTICE LOT - MARCHING LIONS

We have exciting news!  Our Marching Lions now have a practice area in the West Student Parking Lot!  We have lined this lot, similar to what many other schools with marching bands do, and our band can now practice their field formations here after school.  This will help this growing program continue to learn and enhance field shows and work on their marching basics.

What does this mean for you?  If you are a student who drives to school, we would ask that during marching season you do not park in the first section of this student lot beyond 4pm.  Normal school day and afternoon carline will not be affected at all, but at 4pm several days each week during marching season the band will utilize this area.

There are three sections of the student lot, and only one of these sections is lined.  This is the only section we will need available for these 4pm rehearsals - you will notice the purple lines on the pavement of this section.  Thank you so much for your consideration here, and helping our Marching Lions be the very best they can be!

FINE ARTS FESTIVAL 2024 LAUNCH MEETING

Each year we have an annual event we participate in called the Fine Arts Festival, and we would LOVE for you to join us this year!  This is a growing program for our Performing Arts families, and so much fun!  And the ministry and experience of each student is invaluable!  For more information about this festival, please visit https://youth.ag.org/Participate/Fine-Arts.

Are you ready to participate in Fine Arts Festival 2024? Our Fine Arts Festival Launch will be Monday night, October 2 at 6pm in The Gathering Place. Keeping you plugged into the exciting things happening with Performing Arts

Tim Hurt - Performing Arts Director

Bearing the image of the Creator as we

cultivate creativity

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOr

We have just completed our first week of classes, and couldn’t be more excited.  The caliber of student in the Arts classroom is outstanding, we can certainly see great things to come!  As things continue to unfold, you may have questions.  Please feel free to reach out to any of our Arts staff and let us know how we can help.  Simply email your Director or send to performingarts@tcslions.org and we’ll make sure to get you the information you need.

We have put together a statement that describes what we hope to accomplish in the Arts department at TCS.  We desire to bear the image of the Creator as we cultivate creativity.  This simple phrase encompasses the heart behind what we do as your Arts staff.  We wish to do everything in the image of Christ first and foremost.  And to teach your students to do the same.  And we recognize that God is our Master Creator.  We want to honor Him for the gift He has given each of us, and train to become better and better in that gift each and every day.  We want to cultivate the creativity inside of each student, and see them blossom and realize their full potential in Christ.

Here’s to a great school year ahead.  We will give you our best.  And will pull the best out of your student as well.  Let’s have a fantastic school year together and create for God’s glory!
