NEW JAZZ COMBO . . . COMING SOON

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS . . .

We will be starting a jazz combo next semester, and you’re invited!  This is for anyone interested in studying jazz at an entry level.  This is the first time we will have this group offered at TCS, and we are so excited!  Here are the details:

Who: High School students with an interest in learning about jazz

Rehearsals: Thursdays weekly from 3:30-5pm

Location: Band Room

Cost: $75 per student (covers two books for each student and instructor fees)

Leaders: Jason Christian and Tim Hurt

ARTS ACADEMY UPDATES

OPEN POSITION: PIANO

We are growing in the Arts Academy.  And with growth comes new instructors.  This is so exciting!  We are in search of a piano instructor who can teach during the school day several days each week.  This person will need a solid Christian testimony and skills to teach piano methods through a classical approach.  Interested candidates should reach out to Tim Hurt at tim.hurt@tcslions.org for next steps.  Thanks for helping us spread the word here.

NEW INSTRUCTORS

We would like to welcome two new instructors to our staff.  We are so excited to introduce:

Nien-hwa Chin - Cello, Piano - nzc102@gmail.com

Nien-hwa Chin is a concert cellist and a pianist.  She holds bachelor’s degrees in piano and cello performances from Taiwan and graduate degrees in cello performance and music education from Penn State.  She was under the tutelage of Professors Kim Cook, Martha Gerschefski, and Eugene Osadchy.  She also took master classes with Yo-Yo Ma, David Finckel, Anne Williams and Oxana Yablonskaya.

In addition to constant performances in both solo and ensemble settings, Ms. Chin has taught in K-12 public/private schools, universities and her own music studio.  She also served as the music director of contemporary services at US Air Force chapel in Tokyo while stationed in Japan.

Ms. Chin and her family relocated back to Peachtree City in the summer of 2024 after 10 years of living overseas.  She enjoys traveling, reading, dancing and cooking with her two teenage children, Joshua and Elspeth.

Frank van der Merwe - Guitar, Drum Set, Bass Guitar, Rock Vocals - fvdm92@gmail.com

Frank van der Merwe grew up in a family that loved music, so he was, of course, drawn to the same love at an early age.  He started his musical journey by learning a chord on his father’s guitar and after that he couldn’t put it down!

Growing up and living in Australia, Frank moved to the US in 2018.  He has played many different styles and experienced countless venues and genres.  He has played on worship teams, with road bands, and in recording studios.  When Frank isn’t teaching, he is recording and producing his own music in his home studio.

Frank has always found himself surrounded by music whether it’s performing, writing, producing, or teaching.  He is excited to make a difference by sharing his passion with students in our community.

“Music is a gift from God.  There are songs of praise being sung right this moment!”

High School One Act

THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE

This weekend, the TCS Roaring Dramatics performed their one-act production of the traditional C. S. Lewis story The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. The show proved to be a success with audiences enjoying the story of the four Pevensie children who find themselves in the land of Narnia and meet whimsical characters including the Beaver family, Mr. Tumnus, and the powerful Aslan. The Roaring Dramatics shared with Trinity the wonderful power and divine love of our God, and audiences took home a story with a truly inspiring message. Next week, the cast and crew will go to perform at the Regional One Act Competition at Upson Lee High School. They will compete with eight other schools with this magical tale, spreading the power of God to other high schools through the art of theater!

MARCHING LIONS

As the weeks have passed since our first competition I am still in awe of what the Lord has done in this season. In true Jesus fashion, He does exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ever imagine.

Sometimes I stand back and look at the band kids from 5th-12th grade and think “I pray they truly know how much Jesus loves them.” I try to keep myself in a heart posture of “Lord let me see them how YOU see them and help me to teach them”

Please keep praying for our band program and that the Lord will continue to show us how to set things in motion for each next season.  - Mrs. Palmer

INSTRUMENT REPAIR

We use Big Note Music for on site repair of many of our musical instruments.  If you have an instrument that needs repair as the school year begins, this may be a great option for you.  The process works with you filling out an online form, pre-paying for the repair, and then they come for a scheduled repair session right on our Trinity campus.  Your student wouldn’t be away from their instrument except when it’s on the repair table.  This convenient option has worked for us for a few years now.  Simply fill out the online form and let us know that a repair has been scheduled.

A Note from the Director

We are rolling!  We are rehearsing!!  And we are already performing!!!  Classes have started, and we could not be more excited!!!  Theatrically, vocally, instrumentally, and technically, students are already showing their potential, and the future is bright at TCS!!!  As we continue throughout these first few weeks, please feel free to reach out to any of our Performing Arts staff.  We are glad to help, as we want to cultivate a creative space for each of our students to thrive in.

Come check out our Marching Lions this Friday at our first football game as we present The Greatest Showman and cheer our Lions on to victory.  Respond to one of the many theatrical opportunities launched at our recent interest meeting to let your student take the stage.  And celebrate our students who just came back from Columbus, Ohio and the National Fine Arts Festival.  These are just a few highlights early in the year.  There is so much to celebrate, and so many exciting adventures in store.

Parents, thank you already for your amazing support for the Arts.  We feel it, and we appreciate it!!  Please let us know if you would like to jump in and help, we love involving the whole family.  Here’s to an amazing year ahead, and realizing God’s full potential in and through all of us!!

Tim Hurt - Performing Arts Director

“Bearing the image of the Creator as we cultivate creativity.”

We think about themes when we lead our students throughout each school year.  We consider themes when planning concerts or seasons or events.  And we implement these themes as we teach, train and mentor our students through these particular journeys.  All of these themes center around the creativity that God has placed within each of us, which mirrors our mission statement for Performing Arts: “Bearing the image of the Creator as we cultivate creativity.

Themes are present throughout all of scripture, and include redemption, freedom, growth, joy, God’s covenant with us, and so many more!  As we come to the end of our school year, and launch into “next seasons” both on the calendar and in life, we ask you to consider God’s theme for you.  His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness!  He has given you everything you need to accomplish His will for your life, and to use the creativity within you to glorify His Son!

Students, you are valuable in God’s kingdom.  The gifts He has placed within you are amazing, and you are displaying those throughout these end of year concerts and performances.  And adults, you are valuable too!  You and I have the privilege to mentor young lives, to impart within each of the students so many themes of life and godliness.

I am so blessed to be able to oversee so many amazing people in our Arts Department.  God is doing amazing things in and through us, and I can’t wait to see how His plan continues to unfold.  Many thanks to each of you, for your involvement, support, and prayers.  Here’s to great themes ahead, to amazing musical adventures together, and for God to be the center of it all!
