A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

As we continue our way through the month of September, I want to draw your attention to the fact we are now halfway through Quarter 1. Don’t panic if your child’s grades aren’t exactly where you want them to be. We start the school year a little slow when it comes to grade book entries, but you should see an increase in grades over the next few weeks. This will allow additional opportunities for students to pull up any low grades. Having said that, please give attention to your child’s progress. While we don’t solicit parent conferences for every child in upper elementary, our staff is certainly open to talking through your child’s performance so far if you have any questions or concerns. Don’t wait until the end of Quarter 1 if you have those questions and concerns now. We are happy to connect with you to ensure both you and your child feel supported and informed.

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mrs. Peters spoke to our students from Luke 15:11-32 focusing specifically on the Parable of the Prodigal Son. From this well-known parable we discovered historical and cultural context to help us understand that despite both sons being sinners, the compassionate, gracious love of the Father was on full display.  We were challenged that like the Father, our hearts should be full of joy and celebration when one who was lost is found.

LIONS OF THE WEEK

  • 4th Grade - Chance Hollaway

  • 5th Grade - Rosie Poelman

THIS WEEK’S MEMORY VERSE:

As you may notice, our 4th-8th graders memorize the same verses each year. These memory verses are selected intentionally based on the promises and truths they contain that are so relevant for our students as they learn to follow Jesus. Our hope is that these 20 verses will be remembered for years to come after being memorized for multiple years in Upper Elementary and Middle School.

I John 1:5-6

v. 5 This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. v. 6 If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Vinson spoke from I John 1:5-6 (upcoming memory verse) and encouraged our students about what it means to “walk in the light” as a believer. Mr. Vinson pointed our students to the truths of I John, that true Christians walk in the light by believing the biblical FACTS about Jesus, seeking to ACT in ways consistent with the commands found in the Bible, and by REACTING to other people in loving ways.

HOUSE FOCUS: THE LEWIS HOUSE

Our House System at TCS is designed to introduce our elementary and middle school students to important historical Christian figures who exhibit character qualities that we hope to see exemplified in our own student body as well. This week, we are focusing on the NEE HOUSE.

Character Trait to Remember

Do What is Right Even When It’s Costly

Who was he? Watchman Nee, or Nee Shu-tsu, was an extremely intelligent, influential Christian leader and teacher in China. He was arrested for the sake of the gospel and falsely sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment and ultimately died in prison.

Learn more about Watchman Nee by watching the video we showed in chapel this week

A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

This week, we will have our first Remote Learning Day of the school year! On Friday, September 1, all students are expected to remain off campus with an expectation of completing remote school work for the day. Remote Learning Days are designed to help grow our staff through professional development while also giving our students a break from the normal school day. Our goal is to couple these days with regularly scheduled breaks in order to increase the flexibility for family travel plans. While Remote Learning Days do give our students a day off from campus learning, we still expect students to complete the work sent home. All students are expected to submit their Remote Learning Day work by Tuesday, September 5, when we return from the Labor Day holiday. Please check Blackbaud for your child’s Remote Learning assignments. Middle school students should expect around 1-1 1/2 hours worth of work for the day.

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Vinson kicked off the year with an emphasis on the culture we desire for our upper elementary student body. There are 3 areas of emphasis your child will hear mentioned over and over again this year as we seek to create a Christ-honoring culture for our students.

  1. Emphasis #1 - Doing everything with excellence…aka “Fill it to the brim”

  • Just like the servants who filled the empty pitchers with water “to the brim” at the wedding in Cana (John 2) where Jesus worked his first miracle, we want our students to give their best effort in all they are asked to do as well. “Filling it to the brim” is a key phrase in our upper elementary, because we want our students pushing back against the tendency to do things half-heartedly.

2. Emphasis #2 - Doing everything with kindness (the Golden Rule)

  • While it’s common to hear that “kids at this age are just mean”, we desire a different experience at TCS. Our students are pushed to understand the call placed on their life as Christians to treat others in the ways they want to be treated. We want love and kindness to be the experience all of our students have here at TCS.

3. Emphasis #3 - Doing everything with purity (using the Bible as our guide)

  • Upper elementary students aren’t too young to treasure God’s Word. As Ps. 119 says, we want our students to use the Bible as their lamp/light for making choices and decisions each day. Particularly, we want our students to see the call God gives for purity in our thoughts, words and actions.

Join us in emphasizing these same important truths at home! May all of our students learn to do everything with excellence, kindness and purity.

LIONS OF THE WEEK

  • Students who have been recognized by their teachers for setting a good example and making right choices during the school day.

    • 4th Grade - Levi Williams

    • 5th Grade - AJ Vinson

HOUSE FOCUS: THE ELLIOT HOUSE

Our House System at TCS is designed to introduce our elementary and middle school students to important historical Christian figures who exhibit character qualities that we hope to see exemplified in our own student body as well. This week, we are focusing on the ELLIOT HOUSE.

Character Trait to Remember

BE READY TO FORGIVE AND LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

Who was Elisabeth Elliot? She was a missionary with her first husband Jim Elliot to the unreached Auca Indians in Ecuador. She continued to work with this tribe despite the fact that they murdered her husband.

Learn more about Elisabeth Elliot by watching the video we showed in chapel this week.

MEET OUR NEW UPPER ELEMENTARY FACULTY

ELEMENTARY ART TEACHER

Ansley Boone is thrilled to teach Art to Upper Elementary and Middle school students this year. She is a devoted mother of three boys, Tucker (11th grade), Sawyer (10th grade), and Cooper (7th grade), who she passionately cheers on at football games every weekend. Living in Moreland, she enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, ziplining, and rafting. Traveling with her sons has become a recent passion. She feels grateful that her family became part of the Trinity community, which values supporting each other and sharing the love of Jesus with the children. Ansley majored in Art and Design with a focus on painting. Having been a 2nd-grade teacher assistant for the past two years, Ansley felt a calling to pursue teaching further. Ansley sees teaching as a divine calling and a way to share her love for Jesus with her students. Working at Trinity has been fulfilling, and she is excited to be given the opportunity to share her artistic passion and encourage her students to pursue their creativity in ways that honor Jesus.

5TH GRADE READING TEACHER

Raegan Barnhill is excited to have the privilege of teaching reading to 5th graders at Trinity this year. With a decade of teaching experience at the school, she has taught both 2nd and 4th grades. Recently, she proudly witnessed her first class of students graduate in May.

Raegan firmly believes that teaching is her divine calling, and she is deeply passionate about her students' learning and growth. Her ultimate desire is to instill in them a love for the Lord and the application of His teachings in every aspect of their lives. Outside of her professional life, Raegan is a devoted wife and mother of two children, who also attend Trinity. The sense of community and the Christ-centered culture at the school are cherished by her whole family. They consider it a true blessing to be part of the Trinity community, both as employees and as parents of students. Anticipating the new school year, Raegan is eager to witness how the Lord will work in the lives of each of her students and is excited about the learning journey ahead.

A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

Over the next 3 weeks, you will see your child engaging in the final testing opportunities for this school year. This week (Monday and Tuesday), our students will take their end of year Progress Learning assessments. Progress Learning is our benchmark testing that shows learning growth over the course of this year.

Here are a few suggestions for maximizing your child’s performance this week.

  1. REST - make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before the testing.

  2. RELAX - encourage your child to do their very best without stressing.

In addition, PRIORITIZE ATTENDANCE for these days. Students are required to make up any missed Progress Learning testing, so to avoid being pulled or staying after school, please prioritize your child being present and punctual each day.

A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

The tomb is still empty and Jesus has still won the great victory over death! As we come out of Easter Sunday, don’t let the resurrection be a truth that is celebrated only once a year. As the Apostle Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 15, the resurrection of Jesus is our great hope and the foundation of our faith. He lives, and because of that, we can face tomorrow, and every day, knowing that He is ruling and reigning forever. Amen! Come Lord, Jesus!

HOW ARE WE DOING?

Let me know how our team is doing in keeping you informed about your child’s education this year. If you are lacking communication regarding one of your child’s classes, please let me know so I can help! adam.vinson@tcslions.org.

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Vinson spoke to our students on I Thessalonians 4:13-18 which contains the upcoming week’s memory verses for our students. Pointing our students to the hope found in Jesus’ resurrection and certain return, Mr. Vinson encouraged our students to see that when Jesus comes, we will enjoy REUNION with loved ones who have passed away, our own RESURRECTION when our bodies are radically transformed to a state that is free from sin and death, and we will REMAIN with Jesus forever at that time. As believers, we will undoubtedly have our lives impacted by death, but as Christians, we grieve with hope because our Savior lives!

I Thessalonians 4:14, 17-18

v. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep.  v. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.  v. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
