A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Vinson challenged our students from Joshua 24 with the question of “Who will you serve?”. As Joshua spoke to the children of Israel for the last time, he wanted to leave a lasting impact by reminding Israel that the one true God gives us every reason to follow Him. As we gathered together for the last time this year, students were reminded that summer is not a break from following God. We want our students to continue growing and maturing spiritually as they seek to follow Jesus throughout the summer months. May we all keep choosing to serve Him!

A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

We are in the home stretch now! Check out what’s been happening in our upper elementary classrooms during the months of April and May:

Mrs. Stanfield’s class has been studying homophones. They made posters to help their classmates differentiate words like flour and flower, they’re, there, and their, and by, buy, and bye. They also created their own islands using map skills and wrote both an expository and persuasive paper.

Mrs. Goss’ class is wrapping up history with some fun biography reports. Mrs. Goss spent a lot of time videoing and editing. We can’t wait to see the final products!

Miss Dale’s class won a cozy day for beating the teacher in “Teacher vs. Students”! They also played some fun review games outside.

Mrs. Burnett’s class celebrated Easter by having a fun reading comprehension egg hunt!

Both 4th and 5th grades were able to take some fun field trips to Six Flags! We are so grateful to our teachers, administrators, and parent chaperones who make all of this possible.

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Lassiter (7th grade history teacher) spoke to our students on our call to worship God above everything else and how Jesus makes that possible. Speaking from I Samuel 4-6, Mr. Lassiter helped us see that we are not to use God but to serve Him, unlike the children of Israel who sought to use the Ark of the Covenant as a weapon against the Philistines. In showing us how the God of Israel was superior to Dagon, god of Philistia, we were reminded that God alone is the true hope of our life.

Coach Holly Savoy spoke to our students on how to overcome spiritual mountains and obstacles in our lives by utilizing prayer, Bible study, worship/thankfulness, and Christian community. Using her experience as a teenager on the Nickelodeon TV show “Guts”, Coach Holly helped our students to see that by following God’s path, we can overcome any mountain in our life. Ask your child about the TV clips they were able to view of Coach Holly as she took 1st place by conquering the MegaCrag and winning the Guts competition!

PREPARING FOR IOWA STANDARDIZED TESTING

Our upcoming IOWA testing will take place the week of May 2. How can you help your child prepare to do their very best? Utilize the suggested tips below to make IOWA week an accurate reflection of your child’s learning and ability.

  1. Make sure your child gets plenty of REST. With no homework or regular assessments being given, strive to have your child in bed early if possible while trying to reduce the events and activities your family will be required to attend.

  2. EAT a good breakfast each day. Sleep + food will help your child think clearly and focus. Good proteins and high fiber foods will help keep your child alert and will reduce the chances of them getting hungry during the test.

  3. ENCOURAGE your child to do their very best. The IOWA tests are one piece of the overall assessment approach taken at TCS. Don’t overemphasize the importance of these testing results. IOWA is meant to show us how your child is growing and learning. The goal is for them to simply do their best.

  4. Prioritize PUNCTUALITY when it comes to arriving at school on time. When students feel rushed, they often feel stressed and aren’t able to do their best. By being on time, you help ensure your child hears all of the instructions for the test which creates a more relaxing testing environment.

  5. Be ACTIVE after school. While students will still engage in physical activity at school during IOWA testing week, the more energy your child can exert the better. Plan some afternoon outdoor activities for your family to help facilitate a more focused testing time for your child.

A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

I hope each of you had a wonderful Easter Sunday celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! As I Corinthians 15:19 says, no matter how wonderful our life may be, if this life is our greatest hope as Christians, we ought to be pitied. But this life is not our greatest hope! May the truth of Christ’s resurrection and the assured hope of His return continue to sustain both you and your family as you seek to follow Him!

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Using the house motto of the Elliot House (Be Ready to Forgive and Love Your Enemies), Mr. Veal (6th grade History teacher) spoke to our students from Matthew 18:21-35 on the importance of forgiveness. As Elisabeth Elliot was willing to forgive those who murdered her husband, we too must strive to forgive our enemies as well. The story found in Matthew 18 about the unforgiving servant reminds us that if we do not show mercy and forgiveness to others, we should not expect that God will show those things to us either. May we all be thankful that God made the path to forgiveness for us by sending His Son Jesus to not die for us, but to live again as well!

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Pastor BJ Cobb from First Baptist Senoia spoke to our students from Philippians 2 regarding both the “bigness” and “closeness” of God. The God of the universe rules and reigns and is certainly big enough to handle all of our needs, but He is also faithful to come close to us so that He is aware of the needs we have too. Thank you Pastor BJ for faithfully bringing this word of encouragement to our student body!

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

We were blessed to have Pastor JC Worley from GO Church join us, and he spoke about the choices we make in our daily lives. Pastor JC reminded our students that our lives are shaped by our choices. He encouraged our students to make wise choices and to take every thought captive (II Cor. 10:5) using the acronym “PAUSE”. To make wise choices we should P-ray, A-sk for help, U-se our Bibles, S-ay the choice out loud, and E-xperience freedom once we have done so. Thank you Pastor JC for helping our students see the need for wisdom and counsel as they make decisions in a world full of temptations.

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Gabe Rivera with Acts the 3 Man Show that is performing in Newnan March 11, 12, 13, challenged our students to stay true to Scripture as they learn to use whatever gifts God has given them to share the truth of the Gospel.

Acts the 3 Man Show is comprised of 3 professional actors, two from Hollywood, and one from right here in Newnan, who travel the country presenting the Book of Acts from Scripture.  Each actor plays 17-24 characters, and the powerful stories of the early church are shared in dramatic form on the stage.  From Paul’s conversion, shipwreck, and missionary journeys to the stories of Peter, Luke, John Mark, Nero, and many others, this show will challenge your faith, encourage your heart, and empower your witness for the Lord Jesus Christ in this day and age!

Here at TCS, we are passionate about helping our students have opportunities to see and hear the truth of the Word of God in new ways, so we are reaching out to let you know that the performance next Friday, March 11th is especially focused on students!  Mr. Hurt, our Head of Performing Arts, will be opening the show in prayer, and we would love to have as many TCS students and families there!

This is also an incredible outreach opportunity to invite those who may not know the Lord, to see this show.  Many times, people will come to a show like this before they will come to a church service.  So we would love to see our students get excited about sharing this with their friends.

Here is a trailer for the show if you would like to learn more: https://youtu.be/UNunDoap2NA

Tickets are available at www.fbcnewnan.org for each of the showings.

MARCH MEMORY VERSES: PHILIPPIANS 2:12-16

Help your child learn their memory verses over the course of this month.

Week of February 28

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

Week of March 7

13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing,

Week of March 14

15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

Week of March 21

16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

February seemed to fly by, but our classes never lost momentum!  Check out what has been happening in our upper elementary classrooms this month:

4th Grade Reading - Mrs. Stephenson’s class is finishing up their study of The Sign of the Beaver by creating a fun brochure about the novel.

4th Grade Science - Mrs. Goss’ class has been studying simple machines by making their own!

4th Grade ELA - Mrs. Stanfield’s class spent some time writing about God’s love, how it is unconditional and never changes!

4th Grade Math - Mrs. Long’s students have really been focusing on long division this month. When her students “blow her away” with their brilliance, Mrs. Long rewards them with some bubble gum to chew during class!

5th Grade Science - Students in Miss Dale’s class have been busy learning all about electricity and magnets this month! They have created their own copper circuits and seen the magnetic field during some fun, interactive labs.

5th Grade ELA - Students in Mrs. Peters’ class have been working on compound and complex sentences. They’ve displayed some of their best in the hallway for all to see!

MEMORY VERSE REMINDER

Don’t forget that this week’s memory verse quiz will be weighted as “2” in the grade book. This is a great chance for your child to improve upon their Bible grade so encourage them to study this week so they can do their very best! This week’s verse quiz is over Philippians 2:13-14!

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Vinson challenged our students regarding their relationship with God and whether the choices they are currently making and the company they are currently keeping reflect a desire to honor God. Using the stories of Joshua and Ai (Joshua 7) and Samson (Judges 16), Mr. Vinson encouraged our students to examine whether God’s favor is present in their life or if He is seeking to bring about correction through discipline. Pray for our students that God would help them see that their relationship with God is worthy of their attention when there is so much in this world that seeks to distract them.

A MESSAGE FROM MR. VINSON

I hope you and your family had an awesome Winter Break! As we jump back into Quarter 3, encourage your child to keep working hard and doing their very best. As we have been sharing all school year long, we desire our upper elementary culture to reflect an attitude of always “filling it to the brim” (John 2:7) as we want to encourage excellence and hard work as a means of bringing glory to God! (I Cor. 10:31)

LAST WEEK IN CHAPEL

Mr. Vinson reminded our students of the tri-fold culture we are seeking to build here at TCS within our 4th and 5th grades. Based on the principles found in God’s Word, we want to be a place where students strive to “fill it to the brim” (John 2:7) by doing their very best in everything. We also want to be a place where students treat others with kindness and respect…the same treatment they desire from others (Golden Rule of Matt. 7:12). And we want to be a place where God’s Word is treasured and hidden in our hearts (Psalm 119:11) versus sin being hidden and covered in our life. (Ps. 32:5)

Mr. Vinson challenged our students with the acronym of G.R.A.C.E. and the idea that we need to show love and care towards those who are different from us because, in spite of our differences, we are all image bearers of God. G.R.A.C.E. stands for gender, resources, ability, color and ethnicity. Mr. Vinson encouraged our students to appreciate the differences they see in others and to embrace the unique qualities they possess personally as individuals as a means of bringing glory to God.

A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE CLASSROOM:

School is back in full swing after Christmas break!  Take a look at what’s been happening in some of our upper elementary classrooms in January:

4th grade science began the quarter learning all about the water cycle, then ended the month jumping into waves with a cool sound lab!

5th grade science began their unit on plant and animal cells, and it has been nothing short of exciting! They took a trip to Cell-Bucks, learned all about the parts of a microscope and how to use one to identify the parts of a cell, and made models of cells out of candy. YUM!

5th grade math has been working on their dance moves and decimals all at the same time!
